There are some negatives to working in academia, the fixed term contracts, the alarming high workload and the scarily low level of grant success for outrageously qualified candidates. However sometimes an outside perspective can show you a side you didn’t realise was there, or perhaps took for granted.

In2Science helps young people from low income backgrounds progress to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers with the aim to not only improve social mobility, but also encourage a more diverse and inclusive culture within the sector. We work by leveraging the STEM community to host bespoke two-week work placements, matching students with active researchers in academia and industry. In2scienceUK coordinators also provide all the students with university access workshops and careers guidance.

Hearing that I had come first place in the Biochemical Society Science communication competition was a wonderful feeling. Of course, this feeling was in part due to my excitement over the prospect of having an extra £300 to spend on all manner of sensible and not-so-sensible purchases. But more importantly, I had managed to prove to myself that it’s possible to make a successful science video without any money or any clue what the hell I was doing.

As a PhD student with an interest in science policy, I was very excited to get the chance attend Parliamentary Links Day 2017. The subject was global opportunities and UK science, which sounded to me like it would entail a lot of discussion of Brexit and general policies which influence the internationalism of UK science, something which I feel very strongly about.
